You Can't Run Away

When my Drama was surprisingly sold to a new channel,
it was a difficult and painful turnover.
I'd become quite attached to my caste-mates.

However, this time I couldn't bring myself to say goodbye.

So I decided to simply leave as quietly as I had arrived.

However, my wonderful ladies had other plans for me,
and instead sent me away with a heart more full
then I ever dreamed it could be.

Letter's I'll love forever. I heart you all, too.
 I miss them all deeply.
Thankfully I'm not very far away.

My Hero

My life has been made better
by my students.

So, when they said goodbye with pretty confections,
my heart felt full and blessed.
Of course, my coworkers have filled in the cracks
the students could never reach.

Everyday, without fail, they were delightful.
Their stories and tears a welcome part of my day.
And, although I knew I would miss them,
I did not reflect on if they would miss me.

So when they wrote going away letters,
(instead of just signing a going away card)
it cut through me in a way I had not considered
and this generally cold girl cried.

I see clearly in the gifts and words of
my students and co-teachers,
that when the last lights are turned out
and my bags are packed,
they are the heroes
in this chapter
of my drama.

Summer Luv'n

When you have the best co-workers in the world
there is only on thing to do when summer comes around.
Make everyone go to the lake for a BBQ.

I make potato salad and sauerkraut.
They bring the kimchi and meat.
We all bring our families and friends.
We all laugh and play in the sun.

When it's all said and done I don't think I know how to be a good expat.
It seems I'm just a little to interested
in living a normal life
with the normal people
who live in the normal country
doing normal things.

I just want my life to be:
-well-
normal
happy
and a little bit
average.

Every Time Feels Like the First Time

Sometimes the exhaustion
of a new class schedule
can you make you wonder if it's really all worth it.

Then an earnest, little present arrives...

and work becomes totally worth it.

So if you are wondering
if giving your kids teacher a little something
will help them teach better,
the answer is, "YES!!"

We are easily bought
with headbands
and tiny hugs.

Reasons Why

The reasons why I am happy to go to bed at night.
The reasons why I'm excited to get up in the morning.
The reasons why I'm tickled to do my job.
The reasons why even a bad day is a good day.

p.s.  The only song we had control over was "Roll With the Punches".

Trees

"Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong." - Winston Churchill

May they be willows and not oaks.
Bending and swaying with life,
but always staying rooted
and never breaking beneath
the weight that will surely come.
